Terminator Salvation (T4) - Trailer

Movies, Sci-fi 10 Comments »

OMFG! Terminator Salvation (T4) looks immense! Check out this high definition Terminator Salvation (T4) trailer which I saw today and then wet myself with excitement.

If you enjoyed this high definition trailer for Terminator Salvation (T4), please leave a comment.

This trailer makes Terminator Salvation looking outstanding! Finally, new types of Terminator! I saw Motor-Cycle Terminators!, simple Humanoid Terminators (the T600?), and what that gigantic Terminator at the end??!?

Terminator Salvation (T4) - New Terminators

This is what I’ve been waiting for since I first saw Terminator 2 as a kid; T4 could be incredible!

When I first heard about Terminator Salvation (T4), I was sceptical and feared that the Terminator Saga could be ruined by a cheap milking.

But when I heard Christian Bale was playing John Connor in Terminator Salvation (T4), I breathed a sigh of relief. Bale is a quality actor who earned my respect with The Machinist long before he did Batman. I’m sure Bale will be awesome as John Connor in T4.

So, what do you think of this high definition trailer for ‘Terminator Salvation (T4)?

Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot (BEAR)

World News No Comments »

BEAR practises lifting a human-sized dummyIn recent years many Allied soldiers have won medals for bravery and valour for rescuing wounded colleagues in deadly fire-fights.

These courageous ‘battlefield extractions’ have grabbed the headlines in the UK many times since British and American Troops were deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

But sadly in many more cases the rescuers have been injured or killed themselves.

This has led the United States Military to join forces with Vecna Robotics to create the Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot (BEAR).

The BEAR Facts
BEAR practises lifting a human-sized dummyBEAR stands 1.8m tall and can scoop up and carry over 600lbs (270+ kgs) over rough terrain and long distances.

BEAR is intelligent enough to problem solve and navigate with minimal remote assistance from its human operator, in most cases it is told the objective and figures out the details itself on-the-fly.

BEAR is designed to appear comforting, friendly and non-threatening as many soldiers involved in testing reported that they would’ve shot the early prototypes had they seen them coming towards them on the battlefield.

BEAR has tank-like tracks on its upper and lower legs allowing it to glide stealthily over smooth ground with a low profile.

It’s powerful, pivoting joints controlled by Dynamic Balance Behaviour (DBB) software also allow it to quickly stand and run like a human across rougher terrain or stairs.

BEAR is narrow enough to get through doors and flexible enough to go most places a human go.

Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot (BEAR) crouching to scoop up casualtiesVecna Robotics hopes that in the future BEAR will become an integral part of a military team.

The Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot is expected to be deployed in the field with Allied Forces within the next 5 years.

BEAR Applications
Other applications for BEAR include civilian search and rescue (fires, mines etc), hazardous materials handling, transferring heavy patients in civilian hospitals and most interestingly, Assisted Daily Living (ADL).

HomeBEAR
HomeBEAR could work with the elderly or mobility impairedHomeBEAR is a conceptual idea from Vecna Robotics for assisted daily living.

HomeBEAR is a robot designed to meet the needs of the elderly of the mobility impaired in their own homes or carehomes.

HomeBEAR could help its owners out of bed, assist with getting dressed and generally going about their daily lives.

HomeBEAR would have advanced learning and reasoning software allowing it to notice unusual behaviour in patients and notify the appropriate parties (family, paramedics etc).

Is BEAR A Step Too Far?
I think that BEAR is a marvellous idea and while I welcome the continued introduction of technology and computers into our societies. But I can’t help but feel that this is exactly how SkyNet started.

Even if you discount The Terminator Saga, you’re still left with elements of The Matrix and I, Robot; films which raise questions about mankind’s use and abuse of technology and our cruel exploitation of AI.

I wonder how long it will be until BEAR is advanced to the next level, where it is used as a weapon, instead of just a medical tool?

How long will it be before humans in air-conditioned offices in Washington are controlling robotic soldiers on the front-lines, killing people who can’t afford robots?

If we allow that day to come, we will all be sons of bitches.
