“What is the Medusa Cascade?” is a question I’ve been asking since it was mentioned during the Master’s death scene at the end of Doctor Who series 3. As the Master lays dying in the Doctor’s arms they reminisce about old times, in particular when the Doctor;
“…sealed the rift at the Medusa Cascade.”
In the series 4 episode ‘The Fires of Pompeii’, a pre-cog called Evelina, said of the Doctor;
“…your real name is hidden. It burns in the stars, in the Cascade of Medusa herself.”
Weeks later during ‘The Sontaran Stratagem‘ the Doctor states he would like to take Donna Noble to;
“…the fifteenth broken moon of the Medusa Cascade.”
During the ‘Midnight‘ incident the Doctor spoke the words ‘the Medusa Cascade’ to Sky Silvestry to see if she would repeat them.
So, “What is the Medusa Cascade?” The Medusa Cascade is an empty region of space, once a rift in time and space, in which the Doctor died, perhaps why his name is said to burn there.
We can assume the rift at the Medusa Cascade was larger, more unstable and intense than the rift in Cardiff. The Doctor seemed to think it was worth sealing and the Master spoke as if the rift at the Medusa Cascade was something he himself had opened.
Davros was able to hide 27 stolen planets and a Dalek Army inside the Medusa Cascade by shifting the cascade a fraction of a second into the future. So maybe the Medusa Cascade is a malleable region of space that can be more easily manipulated than normal space.
